Flexible delivery methods

One of the first considerations for Train to Gain providers offering to support learners in the workplace is how flexible the delivery of the course needs to be to ensure that the learners and employers are able to sustain their commitment to the programme.

The use of flexible, high quality delivery and interaction is key to successful employer engagement and repeat business. There are many ways that your staff can deliver to a high quality, for example, ensuring trainers’ subject and pedagogic expertise is appropriate to the demands of employer facing work, accreditation of prior learning informs individual action plans, there is effective and appropriate follow-up of identified needs, support is routinely available from IAG and diagnostic assessment specialists, trainees receive regular advice and support during training, staff and resources are up to date, progress is monitored with regular reviews and appropriate targets are set.

Flexible delivery and assessment methods are available to meet a wide range of individual learners’ and employers’ particular circumstances. You take account of workplace schedules (including peak work periods, shift work patterns and shut-down periods) in planning the learning programme/s, you offer a variety of options to learners with different types of learning needs (e.g. distance-learning, mixed mode delivery, etc), the learning materials you use are capable of being adapted for delivery in different formats and organised into varying learning episode timespans.

The curriculum content of any Train to Gain programme should draw as far as possible on the practices and needs of the particular business and its industrial sector. Designing the materials is an integral part of the overall design of the learning programme. Your practitioners need to consider: content – the qualification aims, learners’ aims and each employer’s aims; context – the workplace environment, type of job, level of operation; starting point of learners – arrived at by considering the initial assessment of learners' needs and each employer’s training needs.
