Differentiation

The diverse range of learners on your employer facing programmes is a concern as addressing the needs of learners and employers has been identified as a weakness in the past (for example in the Employer Training Pilots). Learners have a broad portfolio of skills, work experiences and education and when it is considered that some may have had poor learning experiences in their past, it is essential that your trainers use the right approaches to engage all learners. Differentiation is therefore defined as ‘Identifying and addressing the different needs, interests and abilities of all learners to give them the best possible chance of achieving their goals.’

The training you offer, must therefore have a differentiated approach that motivates and inspires each learner. This requires the careful tailoring of training and is critical to the success of the programme for both the employee and the employer (your customer).

Your tutors and trainers may have varying levels of experience and skills in delivering training. Some trainers will be occupationally experienced but have little or no background in training and others may be experienced assessors but have limited training knowledge. Developing approaches that meet the needs of the employee, the employer and the programme of study can be challenging. Staff CPD needs to help your trainers in devising training strategies that meet the needs of all learners by considering their prior experiences, educational backgrounds, work and life experiences, abilities and culture. They need to be able to develop the learner in line with their employer’s expectations and needs and to actively engage all learners to deepen understanding.
