Health and Safety
There are two considerations when talking about health and safety in relation to flexible delivery – one is ensuring health and safety in on the job assessment and the second is the delivery of training in that subject area. Both of these are highly important in terms of flexible delivery and programme design.
Assessors working in the workplace will need to know legal requirements, as well as how to ensure health and safety e.g. for a construction assessor visiting learners on a building site. Your assessors will need a checklist of what to ensure is in place when designing the programme with the employer, and to consider these when planning on-the-job training and assessment.
Health and safety is a topic area that is critically important to industry. Despite being critically important and legally required it is often taught unimaginatively and considered by learners to be boring. This has been confirmed in recent ALI inspection reports. Whilst common to all workplaces, health and safety covers a vast
area and requires all trainers involved to have active working knowledge of the rules and responsibilities for each employee. This level of theory can be daunting for some learners. Teachers and trainers also feel that the
required level of understanding and application means that it is often taught in a tutor-led fashion, providing little active involvement of learners. The challenge, therefore, is to tackle this traditional approach and begin to think creatively to actively engage all learners.
