Assessment and accreditation

Accreditation is the process used by an awarding or professional body to make sure a qualification meets the national requirements as outlined by the relevant sector and sector skills council. Employers tend to prefer accredited courses wherever possible, and therefore you need to ensure that your staff are offering suitable qualifications to the employer and employee, and that an appropriate range of NVQs is offered to match the demands of learners’ job roles. When designing programmes with employers staff will need to consider which elements to accredit e.g. if an employer is choosing an NVQ, which optional units are most appropriate for their business, and are these also appropriate for the learner.

Assessment is the process used for determining the learner’s individual progress or level of competence in an occupational area. This may include you offering a wide variety of techniques such as written tests, examinations, practical tests, assignments and oral tests. The assessment process may be formative (continuous) and /or summative (final). Assessment and internal verification procedures must be adhered to as outlines in your teaching and learning strategy, and meet awarding body (AB) standards.

A variety of assessment strategies can be considered and by working with the employer and the learner your assessors can negotiate when and how assessment will take place, ensuring on-the-job training and assessment services are routinely provided for your employers and their workforce.
